Scotch-Brite™ Finishing Wheel is constructed using silicon carbide abrasive. Our finishing wheels are convolute constructed and have a combination of mineral grades and soft density making them suitable for final finishing applications.
Strike a Balance Between Strength and Finesse
As a convolute wheel, Scotch-Brite™ Finishing Wheel is one-directional and must be run in the direction of the arrows imprinted on its side. As the wheel spins on a bench motor or backstand, it tightens for a more secure attachment. One of the best attributes of the Scotch-Brite™ Finishing Wheel is that it has open web, so it is spongy and responsive to surface irregularities and imperfections. This is important for an application like finishing because, as operators know well, reducing the risk for gouging or marring is key. You need an abrasive that strikes a balance between strength and finesse.
Versatility in Density, Grade and Mineral
To create the Scotch-Brite™ Finishing Wheel, we intersperse aluminum oxide or silicon carbide minerals on nylon fibers using resin. Aluminum oxide is a popular choice among industrial professionals because of its fast cut-rate and long life. Due to its fast cut-rate, hardness, strength, and low heat retention, aluminum oxide mineral is used for many forms of abrasive products and on a wide variety of materials including ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Silicon carbide can also be used on a wide variety of metals. Although it breaks down faster than aluminum oxide, it produces a brighter finish.
In addition to two minerals, this wheel is also offered in various densities – ranging from 2 to 8. Choose a smaller density, like 2, when you desire a softer abrasive and a lighter scratch. Conversely, choose a higher density, like 8, when you desire a tougher scratch and more aggressive burr removal.
The Many Benefits of Scotch Brite™ Abrasives
The open web on our Scotch-Brite™ Finishing Wheel helps it deliver the finishing touch without gouging or marring, which, in turn, reduces scraps and the need for rework. The fibers are spongy and responsive, conforming to contours and surface irregularities. Gaps between the nonwoven nylon fibers allow swarf to escape, so debris does not clog the mineral. Fibers in the web continually break down with use to reveal fresh mineral for exceptional consistency, superior cut performance, and extremely long service life. The nonwoven technology that 3M has innovated makes our Scotch-Brite™ industrial abrasives unique. These abrasives are engineered to work fast and deliver consistent results – part after part.
